Architectural Blueprint Reading

Navigate Architectural Drawings and Coordinate Project Information

Architectural plan sets communicate the size, location, materials, relationships and intended appearance of a building project. Understanding how floor plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules and notes work together helps employees coordinate work and raise better questions.

This practical course introduces architectural drawings used in commercial, institutional, municipal and related construction environments.

Four-hour version: $125 per participant
Eight-hour version: $200 per participant
Delivery: Onsite only
Private-class minimum: Seven-participant billing minimum
Maximum class size: 20 participants
Knowledge check: 20–25 multiple-choice questions; 70% required

Plans and Practical Exercises

Client-supplied plans are preferred when the organization wants exercises connected to its projects. The client must have permission to share the documents and should remove confidential, sensitive or security-related information.

Tampa Bay Training can provide sample plans when client plans are unavailable or unsuitable. The client and instructor confirm plan format, printing and display requirements before class.

Exercises may include:

  • Locating information across an architectural plan set
  • Reading dimensions and applying a stated scale
  • Connecting a floor plan to elevations and sections
  • Tracing a wall, opening or room finish through related documents
  • Using door, window or finish schedules
  • Comparing architectural drawings with civil or structural information
  • Identifying a revision or coordination question
  • Participating in a mock document-coordination discussion

Four-Hour and Eight-Hour Formats

The four-hour course introduces drawing organization, floor plans, elevations, sections, details and schedules through one primary plan-reading exercise.

The eight-hour course provides more extensive document navigation, dimensional exercises, multidisciplinary coordination assignments, group problem-solving and scenario-based communication.

Assessment and Certificate

Participants must attend, actively participate, complete the practical plan-reading activity and earn at least 70% on a 20- to 25-question multiple-choice knowledge check.

Successful participants receive a Tampa Bay Training certificate showing four or eight instructional hours. The certificate has no expiration date.

Accessibility and Course Documents

Blueprint reading requires participants to interpret detailed visual documents. Contact Cindy before registration to discuss accessible digital files, enlarged materials, seating, display needs or other accommodations. Tampa Bay Training will work with the client and participant while preserving the course's essential plan-interpretation objectives.

Professional Boundaries

This course develops plan-reading knowledge. It does not provide architectural, engineering or other licensed design services and does not authorize a participant to change approved plans.

Participants must follow project documents, employer procedures and their assigned authority and refer design conflicts or professional judgments to the appropriate authorized or licensed professional.
