Confined Space Entry Team Training — Construction Activities

Construction-focused instructor-led awareness for employees, supervisors and contractors whose work may place them in or around confined spaces at construction sites.

Choose four hours at $125 per participant or eight hours at $200 per participant. Approved formats are Private Onsite, Private Live Online, Open Enrollment Onsite, Open Enrollment Live Online, and Downtown Tampa Classroom. Private classes bill a minimum of seven participants; open-enrollment classes have no seven-person minimum. This course covers construction entry-team planning and procedures, but no learner or TBT instructor enters a confined space during training.

Important regulatory context

Use OSHA’s Construction-Specific Confined-Space Framework

OSHA’s Confined Spaces in Construction standard, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA, addresses practices and procedures for construction activities at worksites with one or more confined spaces.

The construction standard includes coordination responsibilities among host employers, controlling contractors and entry employers. Training must still be connected to the actual spaces, work, hazards, procedures and rescue arrangements at the site.

Who Should Attend?

  • Construction employees and supervisors
  • Public works and utility construction crews
  • Contractors and subcontractors
  • Employees who may serve as entrants or attendants
  • Entry supervisors and competent persons
  • Project managers, inspectors and safety personnel

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will work toward the ability to:

  • Identify confined spaces and permit spaces that may be encountered during construction
  • Recognize physical and atmospheric hazards before entry
  • Explain coordination responsibilities among affected employers
  • Describe entry permits, isolation, ventilation, testing, monitoring and communication
  • Explain authorized-entrant, attendant and entry-supervisor responsibilities
  • Recognize rescue-planning requirements and the limits of improvised emergency response

Course Content

Construction Space Recognition

  • Pits, manholes, tanks, vessels, sewers, vaults and other examples
  • Permit-space characteristics and changing construction conditions
  • Evaluation and testing concepts
  • Interaction with other applicable construction standards

Coordination and Entry Planning

  • Host-employer, controlling-contractor and entry-employer information exchange
  • Permit program and entry procedures
  • Isolation, ventilation, barriers and access control
  • Simultaneous operations and contractor coordination

Entry-Team Responsibilities

  • Authorized entrant, attendant and entry-supervisor duties
  • Communication and accountability
  • Atmospheric monitoring and acceptable entry conditions
  • Evacuation and permit termination

Rescue and Emergencies

  • Rescue-service evaluation and access
  • Non-entry rescue where appropriate
  • Emergency communication and site access
  • Why unplanned entry rescue is unacceptable

What the Client Should Provide

The following information helps Tampa Bay Training align the class with the organization without implying that a short course replaces the employer’s program responsibilities.

  • Representative drawings, photographs or descriptions of anticipated spaces
  • The project’s employer-coordination approach and applicable procedures
  • Information about monitoring, ventilation, isolation and retrieval equipment
  • For onsite delivery, a safe classroom area and, when approved, a controlled site walk-through outside all confined spaces and away from active hazards; for live online, an accessible meeting connection and project examples that can be discussed without sharing sensitive information
Customization boundary: Standard adaptation and discussion are included. Material curriculum research, development, procedure review, organization-specific tools or other deliverables require a separate written scope and quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same course as Confined Space Entry Team Training — Maintenance Activities?

No. Construction work is addressed through OSHA’s construction-specific confined-space framework. The maintenance course discusses the general-industry permit-space framework and related maintenance applications.

Does completing the class make someone a competent person?

No. A job title or course certificate alone does not establish the knowledge, authority and site-specific capability associated with an OSHA competent-person role.

Does this course include hands-on rescue practice?

Not under the standard course scope. Rescue-team training and practice require a separate needs assessment, equipment plan, qualified instruction and written proposal.

Can TBT tailor the class to a project?

Yes. Standard adaptation is available. Material research, custom curriculum, procedure development or project-specific deliverables require an additional quote.
